Queen Latifah was conceived Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. Latifah, the second child of Lance Owens and Rita Owens is well-known for her political activism and acting skills as well as her knack for rhyme. At 8 years old, her Muslim cousin gave her the name Latifah which translates to "delicate" and "sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah began singing with the choir of Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and was the first person to perform in public when she performed a rendition of "Home" as one of two Dorothys in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's parochial school. Latifah's mother was a catalyst. She was extremely attuned to students and the music. She invited Mark James, a local disc jockey, dubbed D.J. Mark the 45 King to perform at a school dance.
