Julia Fiona Roberts was born in Atlanta on October 28 1967 as the daughter of Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts. Roberts is the fourth Roberts generation to reside in Atlanta starting with her great-grandfather who was a farmer John Pendleton Roberts. In the early years of his life the father of her mother became obsessed by the theater. While a student in Emory University in 1952 he acted in productions on campus and elsewhere in Atlanta. When he joined in 1953 the Air Force in Biloxi, he was seen together with Betty Lou Bredemus in Biloxi. Eric Anthony was their first born. They got married in 1957. Walter and his wife left the military in the year 1957 after which they began enrolment with Walter at Tulane University. In 1960 the family moved into Decatur Georgia where Walter began working at Atlanta's Academy Theater and the Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. Walter and Betty Lou financed their own production of a children's Sunday matinee show called Bum Bum and His Buddies. They established an Actors and Writers Workshop in the year 1964, and it lasted 6 years. They also had Lelisa Billingsley (also called Lisa) and Julia (also known as Julie) during this period.
